When you work in the flame, you “dance” your rod of glass in and out of the fire, give it a chance to warm up gradually. If you put cold glass in a hot flame, you can shock the glass, and bits will break off and go flying – you can get cut or burnt or both. When we begin any craft, even writing, it’s a good idea to give yourself a chance to warm up. When you’re ready, you can turn up the flame and really get cooking!
